Washington Street: A Dangerous Thoroughfare for Pedestrians
The Spirit of Jefferson reports that Washington Street in downtown Charles Town, often perceived as a typical main street, is recognized by traffic engineers and urban planners as one of the region's most hazardous pedestrian corridors. A recent site visit by the Hagerstown/Eastern Panhandle Metropolitan Planning Organization highlighted alarming statistics, revealing 240 traffic collisions from 2018 to 2022, including 41 injuries and six fatal incidents, with five involving vehicles striking pedestrians.
