In an article published by The Journal, it was reported that ten local law enforcement agencies received prestigious platinum awards from the American Automobile Association (AAA) for their outstanding efforts in enhancing traffic safety. This recognition followed a reported 3.6% decrease in traffic fatalities in 2023, attributed to the agencies' dedication to enforcing traffic laws, such as tackling aggressive driving and seat belt usage. Each recognized agency, including the Berkeley County Sheriff Department and various local police departments, demonstrated a long-term commitment to effective traffic safety programs, highlighting their proactive measures to protect and serve their communities.
