The Spirit of Jefferson reports that a radioactive spill on U.S. 340 near Halltown led to the highway being closed for approximately 2.5 hours. The incident occurred on a Friday afternoon when a construction gauge containing radioactive material fell from a pickup truck. Fortunately, no injuries or hazards were reported, but the emergency response and subsequent investigation disrupted traffic for early commuters from around 2:30 p.m. until about 5 p.m. The closure affected U.S. 340 at Marlowe Road and Bakerton Road, with the Bakerton Volunteer Fire Department responding to the incident.
