Shepherd University hosts Carl Frederick Gaertner art exhibit

The Shepherdstown Chronicle reports that Shepherd University launched an art exhibit on Nov. 19 showcasing the works of Carl Frederick Gaertner, organized by his granddaughter Erin Gaertner. The exhibit, located in Scarborough Library, features his gouache paintings and sketches, aiming to preserve his legacy and connect future generations to his portrayal of industrial Appalachia. Erin, who is part of the Appalachian Studies and Communities program, has engaged with collectors of her grandfather's works and plans a retrospective show at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg on Jan. 10, marking the first major exhibition of his art since the 2000s.
