West Virginia Public Broadcasting reports that the Berkeley County Enterprise Computing Center (ECC) will soon transition from fossil fuels to net-zero emissions following a $2.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Located in Kearneysville, this major IRS data center aims to electrify its heating and hot water systems while implementing heat pump cooling technologies, potentially reducing energy consumption by 34% and saving $1.3 million annually. This initiative is part of a larger $23 million project to promote energy efficiency and resilience amidst increasing extreme weather events. The ECC is one of 67 federal sites selected for this funding under the DOE’s Assisting Federal Facilities with Energy Conservation Technologies program.
