In an article published by The Spirit of Jefferson, historian Allan Tischler discusses the adventurous life of Alfred R. Waud, a lesser-known artist who, unlike Mathew Brady, sketched the American Civil War from the front lines. Waud, an immigrant from England who trained at the Government School of Design, captured the immediacy of battle and troop life starting in 1860 for the 'New York Illustrated News'.
